The most expensive thing you keep buying is another month.

It usually begins at night.

The day is finally quiet. Your phone is in your hand. And from nowhere, an idea comes.

Not one of those empty “I want to be rich” thoughts.

A real idea.

A guide you could write. A checklist that would save somebody time. A small lesson hidden inside something you already know how to do.

For a few minutes, you feel different.

You open Notes before the thought disappears. You give it a name. Maybe you even ask ChatGPT to help you expand it.

And as you type, you can almost see it:

Something with your name on it.
Something useful.
Something another person could actually pay for.

Then the questions arrive.

How will I design it?

Do I need a website?

What if nobody buys?

How much will adverts cost?

You search YouTube for one answer.

Forty minutes later, you now have twelve answers and a bigger problem.

One person says you need a funnel. Another says paid ads. Someone is recommending five subscriptions in dollars. Another is filming beside a car and telling you to “invest in yourself” as though your bank balance cannot hear him.

Your small idea begins to look expensive.

So you do the sensible thing.

At least, it feels sensible.

“Let me wait until salary enters.”
“After exams, I’ll have time.”
“Once I get a job, I’ll do it properly.”
“Next month will be better.”

Salary enters.

Transport removes its share. Food collects its own. Data finishes faster than expected. Somebody at home needs help. One debit alert appears that you did not plan for.

Before the month reaches the middle, your money has already started behaving like it is month-end.

So the idea goes back into Notes.

Not deleted.

Just postponed.

Which somehow feels better.

Because a postponed dream can still look perfect in your head.

A started one can fail in public.

Weeks later, you are scrolling and somebody launches something painfully close to your idea.

The design is not even extraordinary.

The person does not seem more intelligent than you.

But people are sharing it. Asking questions. Buying.

And you feel that hot, private irritation that is difficult to explain.

“But I thought of this long ago.”

You did.

They simply allowed their version to exist.

You kept protecting yours from being imperfect.

So you respond the way many of us do: you become serious again.

You save another tutorial.

Bookmark another AI tool.

Join another free class.

Write another plan.

Now you have 38 saved videos, 14 business ideas, seven tools you barely opened…

…and nothing anybody can buy.

The biggest thing holding you back may not be laziness.

It may be the belief that starting is something people do after money arrives.

And that belief sounds responsible because money is genuinely tight.

You do not want to waste ₦10,000. You do not want friends laughing at your “small PDF.” You do not want to post your work and meet silence.

So waiting feels safer.

But look carefully at what safety has already cost you.

The idea you never tested.

The confidence you would have gained from finishing.

The feedback that could have made version two better.

The person who needed what you knew but bought it from somebody who started.

Waiting did not protect the dream. It quietly kept it imaginary.
